Nurse’s Primary Mission to Promote a Healthy Lifestyle

Nurses play a central role in encouraging and maintaining health. The American Nurses Association [ANA] Code of Ethics for Nurses holds nurses accountable for advancing and promoting health in the society (n.d., Provision 9.3).

Healthy living is an important social change topic nowadays. According to the World Health Organization [WHO] (2024), “a healthy lifestyle is a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early.” To ensure it, the WHO is commending a series of steps anyone can take to improve their health.

Eating healthy and maintaining a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5-24.5 are first WHO recommendations. A plant-based nutritious diet of fresh vegetables and fruit is preferred to one containing animal products. Limiting fatty products of animal origin, salt, sugary drinks, and sweets is advised. Alcohol is preferably avoided (WHO, 2024).

Regular physical activity at all ages has a positive impact on health and environment. The WHO (2024) argues that “quality recreation is vital to the health and personal development of all individuals, regardless of gender, functional ability, cultural background, age or socioeconomic status.”

The 8 hours work, 8 hours sleep, and 8 hours personal time is a balanced routine prioritizing well-being and a healthy lifestyle.
